Being asked to repeat yourself in a meeting is one of the main frustrations of speaking English as an additional language.

You have the words and you have the ideas, but something in the delivery doesn’t click with the listener. Accent coaching exists to close that gap and London has an the best coaches to help you. This is a practical guide to see what actually happens once you book a one to one session and how to know whether it is working.

What a British Accent Coach Actually Does

Accent coaching is a service for anyone wishing to modify their current accent. The work covers looking at the RP accent, comparing that to the person’s native language and their current accent and helping the person refine their accent, so they can sound like a British native speaker.

A good coach works on several layers at once rather than drilling isolated sounds:

  • Working on all 45 vowels and consonants, especially the ones your first language does not use
  • Word stress, which is often the single biggest reason a sentence can sound jarring to a native listener
  • Sentence rhythm and intonation, the music and flow of energy when speaking
  • Pace, pausing and projection, so you sound articulate rather than rushing and not being able to deliver a message that’s being heard by the audience
  • Listening skills, because you cannot produce a sound reliably until you can hear it

Most sessions are diagnostic as much as instructional. The coach listens, identifies the habits that are causing the most friction and work at one thing at a time.

Who Books 1:1 Sessions in London

The largest group is professionals who speak English as a second or third language they want a neutral British accent for client meetings, presentations and interviews. They may feel as though their accent is hindering them from gaining more opportunites, so they want to refine it. They want to work on their articulation, their pronunciation so they can be more clear when they speak. They have tried other group classes or English language schools but now they feel as though they need something more tailored, an accent coach who can pick out all the mistakes they are doing wrong.

What Happens in Your First Session

In the first session, we dive deep into your vocal assesssment. This is assessing how you speak when you are reading and how you speak in conversation. We do this to compare the fluency in speech and pick up any sounds you are missing from the RP accent. We have a look at how the voice works and you walk away with learning the first sound, which is the long i: sound as in the word ‘week’.

Assessment and diagnosis

You will be asked to read a short passage and then have a chance to tell the coach more about who you are. The reading exposes specific sounds and how you are producing them; the free speech exposes rhythm, stress and how you sound when you are thinking rather than performing. The coach will then explain what you need to practice more on in order to get the RP accent you want.

Sound work: vowels, consonants and stress

The bulk of a session is usually spent on a handful of target sounds. Work might focus on a long vowel, overstretching the vowel as there is a tendency for the long vowel sound to not be long enough, or we look at different consonants, combining consonant clusters such as the ‘spr’ in the word ‘spring’. Stress placement gets equal attention, because putting the emphasis on the wrong syllable can make a word unrecognisable.

Rhythm, pace and pausing

English is a stress-timed language, which is where many learners feel the difference most sharply. We work on compressing unstressed syllables and lengthening the stressed ones, then on pausing at the right moments. Slowing down slightly and pausing deliberately often improves intelligibility more than any individual sound correction.

Recording, feedback and homework

We send you with a small number of specific things to practise, plus a recording to listen back to. Fifteen minutes to speak a day is the target time to aim for, the more you practice, the faster you see results. The feedback and the support is what you are paying for in one to one work, that’s why at Speaking Voices we offer unlimited Whatsapp support 24/7 so you can send us videos or questions throughout the week when you are practising.

In Person in London or Online

Both formats work, and the choice is usually practical rather than theory. Voice and accent training is offered in London, and also remotely.

Speaking Voices is based in Canary Wharf and delivers its one to one British English accent coaching both online and in person, built around a bespoke programme aimed at a neutral British accent through rhythm and pronunciation work. We also offer the same course but through an online membership for those who wish to self study.

Online sessions suit tend to suit the majority of people and they make it easy to record your own audio. In person sessions give the coach a clearer read on breathing, posture and projection, which matters more if you are preparing for a stage role or a large room. A blended learning approach can be arranged if needed.

How a Programme Usually Unfolds

A discovery call is useful for clarification with how a programme works, but the real change comes from joining the 6 month programme and through weeks of repetition. A typical structure runs weekly with practice between sessions and a recorded benchmark at the start and end.

How to Choose a Coach

Ask a few pointed questions before you book, because accent coaching is a crowded market and credentials vary:

  1. What is my goal that I am trying to achieve with my acccent and who is the best person to help me with this?
  2. Does the accent coach have the qualifications and experience to help me change my accent? And how are they able to do this?
  3. Does the pricing match, the level of expertise involved?
  4. How do they measure my progress?
  5. Do they have the reviews or the case studies to back up their credentials?

Common Misconceptions

Accent coaching is not about erasing where you are from. Most clients keep a recognisable trace of their original accent and simply become easier to understand. It is also not a quick fix. Habits built over time and progress often feels invisible from the inside until it’s mentioned by people around them or they can hear it in themselves.

British accent training is sometimes mistaken for helping the student learn General English which are a separate matter too. Grammar and vocabulary tutoring is not the same as learning pronunciation. This is why Speaking Voices only work with clients who are C1 or C2, fluent in English but their pronunciation is the main focus.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to change an accent?

Most people notice a difference in a handful of sessions. At Speaking Voices we say in a month, we can open your listening ears, so you can hear different sounds, how you used to say something compared to what you are learning now. Month 3 is where you learn all the vowel sounds and you are more comfortable with speaking but still some inconsistencies but Month 6 is where you see the magic happen and everything starts to come together. Most clients who are with us stay as long as 18 months so they can feel confident with speaking.

Is a neutral British accent the same as received pronunciation?

They overlap but are not identical. Received pronunciation is a specific accent associated with a particular social and regional background. A neutral British accent is a broader aim: clear, unplaceable speech that is easy for a wide range of listeners to follow. Many coaches work towards the second because it suits professional contexts better.

Can I do British accent coaching entirely online?

Yes. Individual voice and accent training is widely offered online as well as in London and many coaches work remotely by video call. Online delivery suits busy diaries and makes recording simple. As long as the wifi connection is good enough to hear you then that’s all that matters.
