Is It Possible To Get Rid Of My Foreign Accent?

Writer: EmilyEmily

Everyone has a unique individual sounding voice and one of the main factors that make us sound different is the way we speak. There are so many various accents and accents have been around for many generations, upon centuries since the spoken language was introduced. Nowadays, people are migrating from different countries to learn English or other languages so we discover if it is possible to get rid of your foreign accent.

In my other blog, I wrote Why We All Sound Different? highlighting the differences between the way we sound due to our physiological factors but we go deeper into the similarities and differences between all accents.

The History Behind Our Accents

Accents have existed for as long as language itself. The variations in pronunciation, intonation, and rhythm stem from the complex evolution of languages, migration patterns, and cultural assimilation. For example, English itself has developed numerous accents due to historical events such as the Norman Conquest, the influence of Celtic languages, and colonisation. Each of these events left a mark on regional dialects, leading to the diverse range of accents we recognise today, from Cockney to Received Pronunciation to regional Scottish dialects.

As people migrated, they carried their speech patterns with them, creating new accents through interactions with other languages and dialects. Factors like isolation, social class, and education further contributed to the development and diversification of accents. Moreover, accents serve social functions; they can signify solidarity or distance, acceptance or exclusion. In this context, an accent is more than just pronunciation; it encapsulates heritage and identity.

Why We Have An Accent?

Accents arise from a combination of physiological and social factors. From a physiological view, our unique vocal tract, including the shape of our mouths, tongues, and vocal folds, influences how we produce sounds. Children particularly absorb the speech patterns of those around them, guided by mimicking and socialisation, leading to the establishment of their particular accent.

We subconsciously adapt our speech to reflect the environment we are in. For instance, living in the UK people might gradually alter their accent as they interact predominantly with British speakers. This adaptation often occurs without deliberate intention where some people can pick up the accent very quickly by listening due to the nature of their surroundings.

Psychologically, accents can be tied to feelings of belonging or alienation. A foreign accent can be a marker of one's identity, signalling pride in cultural heritage. However, some may find themselves facing prejudice or challenges in communication tied to their accent, prompting a desire to change their speech patterns.

Can You Change Your Accent?

Yes, it’s possible to change your accent. You can modify it and even eliminate a foreign accent but it requires persistent effort and practice. Techniques for accent reduction also known as elocution encompasses various approaches, including:

  1. Listening and Imitation

A significant aspect of changing an accent involves listening to native speakers regularly. This exposure can be achieved through various media, such as films, podcasts, or conversations. Imitation is a time-tested technique; by mimicking the intonation, rhythm, and pronunciation of native speakers, individuals can begin to alter their speech patterns.

  2. Phonetics Training

Understanding the phonetic differences between your native language and the accent you want to learn is crucial. Phonetics is the study of sounds in human speech. By learning the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), where each sound has its own symbol will help individuals understand how sounds are produced differently without relying on the spelling of the word. Training in phonetics can lead to better articulation of sounds typical of the desired accent.

  3. Mindfulness and Attitude

A positive mindset is essential for anyone looking to change their accent. Embracing the process and being patient can lead to more effective results. The emotional aspect is important; individuals should remember that their accent forms part of their identity. Being mindful of the reasons behind the desire for change and practising every day allows you to work towards the accent you want.

  4. Accent Reduction Coach

Working with an accent reduction coach can provide structured guidance. These professionals can help identify specific sounds or patterns that need addressing, offering tailored exercises and feedback. This one-on-one interaction can vastly improve the effectiveness of the learning process.

  5. Practice and Feedback

Regular practice is essential. This can include reading aloud, recording yourself, and comparing these recordings to native speakers. Self-assessment and receiving constructive feedback are crucial for identifying areas of improvement.

The Practical Implications

While it is possible to change an accent, it's essential to approach the process with realistic expectations. Complete elimination may not be achievable for everyone without dedicated practice, and it's worth noting that accents are not negative, because having an accent is part of your identity. However, in professional environments, a neutral accent may be advantageous in specific industries, particularly for roles which require a lot of speaking. This could be broadcasting, customer service, or presenting speeches to a crowd.

The journey to modifying an accent is deeply personal and requires dedication, practice, and, often professional guidance. Understanding the origins and functions of accents is beneficial for anyone wanting to change their accent.
