Networking is such a great thing that people should do more often! It isn’t just about swapping business cards or making small talk at events, it’s about building real, meaningful relationships. Whether you’re at the start of your career, running your own business, or simply exploring new opportunities, the people you meet along the way can have a lasting impact on your journey and vice versa.
Over the years, I’ve seen how networking has opened doors, created collaborations, and sparked opportunities I never imagined. It’s not just about what you gain; it’s about what you give. Let me share a bit about my own experiences and why I believe networking is one of the most powerful tools for success.
What Networking Has Taught Me
As an actor, we were always told to network with people because when you work in a creative industry it's not necessarily about your talent, it's who you know. Since graduating from drama school in 2018, that's what I've done, I went to networking events to put myself in front of casting directors, the people who choose the actors to audition for a certain production. I would go to networking events with filmmakers, directors and writers. I would connect with them on social media and follow their work. It got to the point where people were asking me for advice on acting agents because I knew a lot about which agents were better for theatre actors compared to film and TV or where the agents were based. I just had a lot of knowledge about the acting world. So as I slowly moved from acting to running my Voice Coaching company Speaking Voices, I knew this was something I had to build from the bottom up.
Luckily, last year October 2023, I found a group on Facebook called the Canary Wharf Female Entrepreneur Group. This really spiralled my energy for growing my business. I had no knowledge of what business was, no clue of how to run a business and from this group I've gained so many connections. I have the privilege of working as an ambassador where I help organise events and connect with ambitious, driven individuals from different industries. I got to hear incredible stories, exchange ideas, and learn from people who were leaps ahead in their careers. And of course, once you are in the realm of the people you want to aspire to be, your confidence grows immensely.
One of the most rewarding aspects of networking is that when you've made that connection with someone, they will know how to contact you when the time is right especially when you meet a person and you get on with them after one conversation. People have given me their own time to give me advice, they've allowed me to host public speaking workshops and they've seen my personal growth.
Why Helping Others Feels So Good
But networking isn’t just about what people can do for you, it’s about what you can do for them as well. Let's face it, no one likes it when it's one-sided. You know that phrase give and receive, it goes both ways. I always go to a networking event and connect with that one person. I start a conversation, see if I can work with them because you don't get on with everyone and in the acting industry you have to like the person you work with. Imagine filming for 1 year and you despise every second of working with that person it's not going to work. And then I remember what they do, so if a person I know is looking for X person, then I would recommend that person to them.
When I’ve introduced two people who end up collaborating, it feels great and also saves them time looking for someone who is good at their job and they are nice. The hours of scrolling through Google to find someone, clicking on their website, then basing your judgement on their Google reviews and then enquiring is a long process. Scientifically speaking, acts of kindness trigger the release of dopamine, often called the “feel-good” hormone. For me, it’s like an energy boost and I actually like networking with people and listening to other people's stories. It reminds me of why I do what I do as a voice and communication coach, to help people step into their potential and find their voice.
The Energy You Get From Networking
I've always left a networking event feeling completely energised and motivated because of the great conversations that happen, that’s the magic of connecting with the right people. When you’re surrounded by driven, inspiring and ambitious individuals, their energy is contagious. I could go to an event and spend the whole time talking to 2 people or try and meet as many people as I can but all these events have been events that I'm interested in. And let's be honest, we’ve all experienced those interactions that feel draining, the ones where the vibe just doesn’t click and that is ok. It’s a reminder to be intentional about who you connect with. Focus on building relationships with people who inspire you, challenge you, or simply bring positivity into your life.
How Networking Creates Opportunities
Networking often feels like planting seeds, you never know which ones will grow or when. A casual conversation today could lead to an unexpected opportunity down the line. Whether you're having a chat at an event or connecting online, every interaction could lead to something big down the road. It's all about sowing those seeds of opportunity and watching them blossom over time. Who knows, a simple chat today might open doors to exciting opportunities tomorrow! Building your network isn't just about quick wins, you're in it for the long haul, it's about investing in long-lasting connections. By nurturing these relationships, you're creating a strong support system that can help you in many ways. Just like taking care of a garden, networking needs ongoing effort and mutual support to see those opportunities and growth flourish.
My Top Networking Tips
If you’re looking to grow your network and make meaningful connections, here’s what’s worked for me:
Be Yourself - I wrote a blog about this phrase but forget trying to impress everyone. Show up as yourself, people appreciate authenticity. It’s better to have a few genuine connections than dozens of shallow ones.
Offer Value First - Think about what you can give, not what you can get. Whether it’s a piece of advice, an introduction, or just being a good listener, offering value goes a long way.
Follow Up - This one’s simple but often overlooked. After meeting someone, send a quick message to say how much you enjoyed the conversation or share a resource they might find useful. It keeps the connection alive.
Step Outside Your Comfort Zone - Some of the best connections I’ve made happened when I walked into a room full of strangers. It’s intimidating at first, but the more you do it, the easier it gets.
Be Consistent - Networking isn’t a one-time thing. Make it a habit to stay in touch with people, attend events, and keep expanding your circle.
The Karma of Networking
Whether you believe in karma or not, the feeling you get when you instantly get on with someone, the energy you get from that conversation is a good one. And I truly believe what you put out into the world comes back to you. Helping others through networking is like building up good energy, and good karma, it’s a cycle of giving and receiving. Every introduction, piece of advice, or opportunity you share has the potential to create a ripple effect. And when you’re known as someone who genuinely cares and contributes, people will naturally want to help you in return.
"Your network is your net worth."
