We have all had those moments where we just do not feel like doing something. Maybe it is a presentation at work, a social event, or even something small like making a phone call. You are not in the mood, you are doubting yourself, or you feel like you will not do it well. The temptation to put it off or avoid it altogether can be overwhelming.
But here is the thing: doing the thing you do not feel like doing, especially when it is something that challenges you, can be one of the most rewarding decisions you will make. Taking action, even when you are hesitant, can shift your mindset, boost your confidence, and open doors you did not even know were there.
Why You Should Do It Anyway
1. Action Builds Confidence
When you are feeling a lack of confidence, the worst thing you can do is stay in your head. Overthinking only amplifies self-doubt. Taking action, on the other hand, shows you that you are capable. Even if it does not go perfectly, you will realise that you survived and often, you did better than you expected.
For example, have you ever dreaded speaking in a meeting but found that once you spoke up, the nervousness faded? That is because confidence is being built in the moment.
2. Doing The Thing Changes Your Mood
It is easy to assume that we need to feel motivated to take action. But the truth is, motivation often follows action, not the other way around. By simply starting, you shift your focus from “I can’t” to “I’m doing it,” and that alone can improve your mood.
Think about a time when you did not feel like exercising but went anyway. How did you feel afterwards? Chances are, you felt energised, accomplished, and glad you went. The same principle applies to challenges like speaking up, networking, or tackling a project.
3. It Creates Opportunities
Avoiding something because you are not in the mood means missing out on potential opportunities. That event you almost skipped might introduce you to someone who inspires you. That task you were avoiding might lead to a breakthrough idea. Taking action, even when you are reluctant, puts you in the path of opportunity.
4. It Changes Your Perspective
When you do something you were dreading, you often realise it was not as bad as you thought. This shift in perspective can reduce your fear of similar challenges in the future. Each time you push through, you reframe those tasks as something you can do, not something to fear or avoid.
5. It Strengthens Your Resilience
You train yourself to handle discomfort and push through difficult emotions. Over time, this builds resilience. Life is full of moments where you will not feel 100% ready or motivated, but every time you act despite the hesitation or fear, you add to your ability to face bigger challenges in the future with confidence and courage.
A Personal Experience
I will admit, there have been plenty of moments in my journey as a Voice and Communications coach where I did not feel like showing up. But how I show up in my business every day, how I look after my clients that I work with, is the sole reason why I do what I do. When I feel awful with a cold or I feel stressed due to the workload, I remember the reason why I’m doing it, I love what I do, it’s changing my life and I’m changing other people’s lives.
How to Push Through When You Don’t Feel Like It
If you are struggling to take action, try these simple steps to get started:
1. Focus On The First Step
Instead of thinking about the entire task or event, focus on just the first step. For example, if you are dreading a speech, start by practising the introduction. Once you begin, you will find it easier to keep going.
2. Remind Yourself Of The Benefits
Think about how you will feel once it is done. Will you feel proud? Relieved? Accomplished? Visualising the outcome can help you push through initial resistance.
3. Use The “Five-Minute Rule”
Commit to doing the task for just five minutes. Often, once you start, you will want to keep going. And even if you do not, at least you have taken some action.
4. Take The Pressure Off Perfection
You do not have to be perfect; you just have to show up. Allow yourself to do the task imperfectly. It is better than not doing it at all.
5. Celebrate Small Wins
Each time you push through and take action, acknowledge it as a win. Over time, these small wins build momentum and make it easier to tackle future challenges.
Why This Matters
When you consistently push through moments of hesitation, you start to trust yourself more. You realise that you are capable of handling challenges, even when they feel uncomfortable. This trust in yourself becomes the foundation for growth, whether it is in your personal life, career or relationships.
Avoiding action might feel comfortable in the moment, but it comes at a cost, missed opportunities, stalled progress, and lingering self-doubt. Taking action, on the other hand, builds resilience, confidence, and a sense of accomplishment that stays with you long after the task is done.
