My Top 5 TED TALKs

As a public speaker, I have grown to watch TED Talks over the years. Some have been very insightful and I wanted to use this blog to highlight my top 5 TED Talks that are worth watching.

1. Angela Lee Duckworth – Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance (April 2013)

This is an inspiration for anyone striving for success. I really liked this TED Talk, I think the top TED Talk I’ve watched and it emphasises the importance of passion and perseverance which is the essence of Grit, so you can do what you love over and over again. This grit is the destination to success in everything that you do. It changed the way to took on challenges and made me rethink my growth mindset. It’s a skill that can be nurtured and any dream is possible with grit.

2. Sir Ken Robinson  – Do schools kill creativity? (February 2006)

Having been teaching before even studying my PGCE (the UK teaching qualification to become a qualified teacher), I knew schools weren’t for everyone. Definitely, it wasn’t for me, even going to university, I think back was that the right choice. The only reason that I did my PGCE was to tick a box for society, and how lucky the pandemic came, I only did 6 months of the course, I hated it so much. I knew something was wrong with our education system and this TED talk sums it all up.

3. Amy Cuddy – Your body language may shape who you are (June 2012)

I think this must have been one of the very first TED talks I watched. As a Voice Coach, I definitely recommend this one. It’s so insightful how one act of non-verbal communication can change a person’s perception of you but also how you feel by giving more open body language. Amy really goes into depth about the science behind body language and how body language gives you confidence. The empowerment you feel by changing something small daily can lead to a bigger impact.

4. Tom Thum – Beatbox Brilliance (May 2016)

This is a crazy video of all the wonderful sounds a person can create with their voice. Speaking is one aspect of using your voice, so is singing, but beatboxing goes beyond a different level. To be able to move all your different articulators, your lips, tongue and jaw super fast to manipulate all of the different sounds is mindblowing. This is less of the conventional talk but it’s astonishing the sounds Tom makes.

5. Scott Dinsmore – How to find work you love (October 2012)

Having a mid-life crisis at the age of 25, not knowing what to do with your life and having worked for the same amount of companies as your age, made me think about how I wanted my future to look. All the jobs I worked for in the past weren’t fulfilling. This made me question a lot about my own self-awareness, what did I want to do, and what was my purpose in life. I then later realised that finding out my own voice is what I liked doing, so now I feel fulfilled helping others go on that same journey to find theirs.

Our voice is a powerful tool that serves various purposes in our daily lives. Our complex need for communication through language highlights our own nuance of emotions, allowing us to partake in social interactions and share valuable experiences that deepen our connection with others. It's easy to overlook the immense power of our voice. Our voice is not a tool we use separately in our personal lives and professional careers. It goes beyond these two worlds, we can use our voice to do something exceptional. Let’s remind ourselves of when we can use our voices and the impact we can create when we combine our own voice with many other voices together.
Self-expression is part of our identity. We can express what we say, how we talk about different subjects and who we talk to. In today's society, the art of self-expression is often clouded by restrictions and taboos. To learn to express ourselves more freely, we must understand these constraints. In this blog, we will learn what these restrictions are and how to tackle these issues.
