When you want to make a real impact at work, in social situations, or on stage, how you communicate matters just as much as what you say. Many people think of voice coaching as something only for actors or singers, but a voice and communications coach can help anyone find clarity, confidence, and their authentic sound. You can stand out and connect with people authentically when you have top communication skills.
I explored the importance of expressing yourself fully in my blog on Why It’s Important To Find Your Voice And Express Yourself, where I discuss how communication shapes every opportunity, relationship, and career move but let’s discuss what my job is as a Voice and Communications Coach.
What Does A Voice Coach Do?
A voice coach is like a public speaker, but the job goes far beyond teaching you how to speak louder or clearer. However, I look at speaking from a whole body approach. Sometimes, people can sink or swim when put into a situation; I am the one who sinks. For me, it is not just about surviving a high-pressure moment; it is about understanding and addressing the root cause of what holds you back.
No matter how much people practice, some will still get the same feelings and symptoms when speaking in front of people. That is why I believe real transformation comes from working on the body, mind, and voice together, so you are not just performing confidence, but truly feeling it from within.
When you address the body (feeling), you can filter out the mind (thought), and you will be more comfortable with your voice (words), so you can communicate with authenticity and be yourself without wearing a mask or putting on layers on how you think you should speak. This holistic approach addresses everything from vocal projection and articulation, having anxiety when you speak, to mindset and presence.
Public Speaking vs Voice Coaching?
Public speaking coaching is often focused on the performance aspects of presenting, teaching you how to speak up, project your voice, manage nerves, and use gestures or eye contact to engage an audience. The goal is usually to help you deliver a powerful speech or presentation with greater confidence. While these skills are valuable, they tend to centre on what happens “on stage.”
Voice and communication coaching, on the other hand, is much broader and more holistic. It addresses not just how you perform in public, but how you communicate in every setting. Unlike generic public speaking courses, voice coaching helps you understand the connection between your body, mind, and voice. You will discover how to ground yourself physically, manage nerves, and tap into your natural presence, so you can speak confidently every time, in every situation. Rather than just rehearsing scripts or memorising gestures, you develop real self-awareness and resilience that carries through to meetings, presentations, interviews, and even challenging conversations
This holistic approach to voice coaching means you are not just learning to “perform” confidence on the surface. Instead, you are building a foundation of genuine self-assurance that allows you to adapt, stay calm under pressure, and express your ideas authentically, whether you are addressing a boardroom, networking at an event, or simply having a difficult conversation with a colleague.
How Clients Benefit From Voice Coaching
Clients come to us for voice coaching for a variety of reasons. Some want to overcome a fear of public speaking, while others are looking to refine their accent for professional advancement. Many want to develop a more engaging presence in meetings or build confidence for networking events.
For example, one client, a project manager in finance, struggled to speak up in meetings, fearing her ideas would be dismissed. Through voice coaching, she learned to project her voice, organise her thoughts, and use body language to command attention. Within months, she was leading presentations and receiving positive feedback from colleagues.
Another client, a non-native English speaker, wanted to sound more confident in interviews. By working on breath support, articulation, and mindset, he not only improved his clarity but also felt more self-assured, landing his dream job soon after.
If you have ever wondered how to become a more engaging speaker, research on presence shows that combining being present in the moment with mindset work leads to greater influence and trust.
